Environmental Mission

Mango Tree Lodge aims to be a place where tourism contributes to the surrounding Tharu community in Thakurwara through the support of local development projects and by encouraging an understanding of sustainable agriculture. We welcome interested conservation groups who can observe the principles of sustainable agriculture in action. They will also have the opportunity to learn and exchange skills in a variety of areas related to life in the Tarai and the lodge.

Growing our own food

We aim to trial different crops, growing and farming techniques, while maintaining a consciousness of energy both in consumption and waste. The results from the trails will be fed into a resource centre for use by the wider local community and visitors.

Alternative Energy

Nepal has the potential to be one of the world leaders in the utilization of alternative energy, with most of the country's power coming from hydro electrics, generated from its many rivers. In the rural communities of Nepal, biogas has been in use for a long time and takes care of the basic energy requirements. Acting as a sanitary form of waste disposal, our anaerobic digester system utilizes the decomposing process by trapping the methane gas to use as a fuel source for cooking, heating or lighting, whilst also providing compost as a by-product for the farm. This has several positive knock-on effects for the wider community; it reduces the need for wood (one cause of deforestation and soil erosion), and also allows more time for other endeavours. In addition we use solar water collectors for heating all the water at the lodge.
